24-hr pH Study

A 24-hour pH study, performed after an oesophageal manometry, is a test which can help determine how much reflux is moving up the oesophagus and how severe it is over the course of 24 hours.

24 hr pH study

Why is a 24-hour pH study performed?

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GORD) can present with different symptoms including heartburn, chest pain, sore throat, bitter taste in mouth etc. A 24-hour pH study allows us to determine if these symptoms are in fact related to reflux.

Sometimes, it can also be performed in people with reflux symptoms after reflux surgery to determine its efficacy.

How is a 24-hour pH study performed?

After the oesophageal manometry is complete, a thinner catheter is passed into the nostril, down the oesophagus, and secured to your nose using tape. The catheter will then be connected to a device that records continuously for the 24-hours that you are required to have the catheter in. You will be able to go home, and advised to eat and drink as you normally would. During the 24-hours, you will be asked to press buttons on the device to record meal times, sleep/nap times and your symptoms.

The catheter and recording device will be removed the following day when you return to the private rooms.

How should I prepare for a 24-hour pH study?

You will need to fast (no food and water) for 6 hours prior to the test. All of your essential medications can still be taken with small sips of water on the day of the exam.

Depending on the indication for your test and your doctor’s request, you may be required to stop prescription reflux medications 7 days prior to your test. Antacids however can be continued.

You will not be allowed to shower or have a bath during the time that the catheter is inserted and recording.

As oesophageal manometry and 24-hour pH study does not require any sedation, you will be able to drive both prior to and after your appointment.
